Habitat - Wetlands

Our community is focused on habitat for a peaceful quiet area that people love.  Please see the rules for more information.

We encourage native trees, shrubs and plants. We have a list of authorized trees that can be planted in your front yard, and we maintain a list of other trees recommended by Virginia Forestry for our common areas.

The wetlands properties surround us and please do not trespass. Hunters are there various times of years as well as a hunting club. Shooting may occur during the night as coyotes and other animals are hunted. The properties have wild animals, including coyotes, bobcats, deer, foxes, poisonous snakes, large turtles, many types of small animals etc.  It's even possible for bears to come.  All of this overflows into our community.  Be aware that there is little that can be done about such "intrusions" and that common sense and safety must prevail.  The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has information on wildlife.

NOTICE:
BE AWARE OF BOBCATS, SNAKES, POISONOUS SNAKES, COYOTES, FOXES, AND MANY MORE ANIMALS THAT COULD BE PRESENT AT ANY TIME.  THE ASSOCIATION IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY PRESENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY NOR ANY RESULTS OF INTERACTING WITH SAME.

We recommend the following tips:
  • Use a high-beam flashlight when you go out at night.
  • Make noise, with a loud whistle or bang pots and pans etc. when you see a coyote or other wild animal.  You want to make it "unpleasant" for wild animals to visit.
  • Never leave any type of food out, whether for feral cats or anything else.
  • Always make sure the trash bin's top is closed and can stay closed. Henrico Public Utilities can replace with a new bin.  Snakes, rodents, insects and wild animals can get into the trash otherwise, and it will draw them.
  • Don't use poison of any type outside.  Eagles eat poisoned rodents etc. and then they die.
  • You can try wolf urine for coyotes etc. to see if it will help.
  • Don't run from a wild animal.
  • If you have a bird feeder, keep it in the backyard and put it away if it is attracting wild animals. Also wash it often so it does not kill birds from bacteria and mold.
  • If you grow vegetables, plant them out back away from the home but not in the common areas. This should help keep wild animals out of front yards.
  • Deer resistant shrubs etc. can help, but truly deer will eat almost anything.
